"Top Gun: Maverick" is one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, and with good reason that's true, Gail, that is true, the high-flying sequel follows navy pilot Pete Mitchell, nicknamed Maverick as you might know.
-
2
As he trains a new generation of pilots for a very special mission, one of them is called "Hangman" played by actor Glen Powell, he previously starred in the oscar-nominated film "Hidden Figures" and Netflix set it up.
-
3
In this clip, a very confident "Hangman" talks to the other elite pilots about who is going to be the team leader of this special mission.
-
4
Bradshaw, as I live and breathe⁽¹⁾. - Hangman, You look… good. - Well, I am good, Rooster, I'm very good. In fact, I am too good to be true⁽²⁾.
-
5
So, anybody know what this special detachment is all about? - No, mission's a mission. They don't confront me. What I want to know, Who's gonna be team leader? And which one of y'all has what it takes to follow me?
-
6
You turned this role down when Tom Cruise called you initially? - I did. - Why? and what changed your mind? - You know I originally auditioned for Miles Teller's role which was the son of goose.
-
7
And then the role wasn't that great on the page, and then I got to sit down with Tom who kind of told me his approach to making movies.
-
8
And I said "goes all right!" "look dude, I know you don't want to do the movie, what kind of career do you want to have?" I was like "dude, you, man".
-
9
He's like "well do you know how I do that?" I was like "you choose great roles." he goes "no I choose great movies and I make the roles great."
-
10
And so we got to basically make this role together which was kind of a dream come true. - Yeah did Tom have an influence on you? and I only asked that because now we hear that you've actually gone and gotten your pilot's license.
-
11
Was that something you had thought about doing ever before? - I feel like I've always wanted to get my pilot's license, it's always like on your bucket list⁽³⁾.
-
12
I mean it's like something that just like for me like it's always like that spontaneous sense of adventure that you can just like pick up and fly anywhere anytime.
-
13
And because Tom put together this flight program where he literally, we were flying in the Extra 300, the Cessna, the L-39, the 18, we flew in all these different aircraft.
-
14
And I pretty much got all the hours I would need and I knew so much about aviation that I could just finish it up.
-
15
So those scenes are actually you? - Oh yeah, we're in the back of real F-18s this entire movie. - Were you afraid? - There's a couple moments.
-
16
No because the movie I have to say is amazing, I can't wait for American to see it, I can't wait for them to see you in it.
-
17
But were you afraid? I mean it's more to me than just a couple of moments when we look, half the time I didn't know what I was looking at, I just knew it was very scary.
-
18
It's you know we're trying to put audiences on like a serious thrill ride, that's why Tom was like "hey we gotta shoot this thing for real!"
-
19
There were days in which we were flying like 50 feet off the ground, 500 knots through canyons where I didn't tell my mom what I was doing that day. But overall I mean we're flying with the best pilots in the navy, so...
