As millions of Americans inch closer to retirement age, there are things they can do to improve their balance and stability.
Maria Granzotti is the chief medical officer for Tivity Health, and joins us now to talk about a fall prevention program for seniors.
Welcome Maria, as a longtime ER doctor, what have you experienced while treating patients who have fallen?
Yeah, unfortunately, over my over 20-year career in emergency medicine, I saw too many people come in with Falls.
There were several risk factors affiliated with it, not just to keep situations where they had tripped or fallen that impacted the fall.
And their impact on their quality of life, not only their own, but also their families.
What are the risk factors for falling? And how can we prevent them?
There are multiple, and they can be individual, that are impactful, or in combination.
One of the biggest ones is your home, your home itself, over 60% of Falls occur within your home.
It could be rugs, it could be entryways, it could be doors, and then what also adds to that, is sometimes our vision is not as keen, also our hearing is not as good as previously.
In addition, we tend to lose strength, and have mobility issues or flexibility issues, and also can have some balance issues.
Maria, tell us about the Silver Sneakers⁽¹⁾ program and how seniors can benefit from it.
